RPC transportation planner John King says GreenRide hopes to have up to 1,500 users within the program’s first year. (Its first few weeks saw 100 registered users.) “It’s all pretty new to us,” King says. “We’re still getting a feel for what works well in this region.”

In 199os the U.S. Department of Energy established the Clean Cities program as tool to implement the Federal Energy Policy Act. Our mission is to advance the energy, economic and environmental security of the United States by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum use in transportation. The Greater Baton Rouge Clean Cities Coalition is one of nearly 100 programs across the country working to achieve this mission. We are thrilled that government leaders remain excited about furthering the national energy goals set forth almost a decade ago.

In Tuesday’s State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama reiterated his dedication to investment in petroleum alternatives saying,

“With [the United States controlling] only 2 percent of the world’s oil reserves, oil isn’t enough. This country needs an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy.”

Alternative fuels enhance security because they are domestically available, more affordable and cleaner burning that petroleum derived fuels. Although the extent varies, this is true for CNG, LPG, Electricity, Biofuels, Hydrogen, etc.

We encourage you to take a look at the following list of points made regarding the diversification of transportation fuels in the State of the Union Address. We’d also like to extend an applause to President Obama and all of our nation’s leaders who invest in America’s future through their support of alternative transportation.

What is America doing to further the mission of the Clean Cities?

Here’s a quick overview of important quotes on clean energy from the State of the Union Address.

Subsidizing the clean energy industry.

“We have subsidized oil companies for a century. That’s long enough. It’s time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that’s rarely been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry that’s never been more promising.”

Developing natural gas resources.

“The development of natural gas will create jobs and power trucks and factories that are cleaner and cheaper, proving that we don’t have to choose between our environment and our economy.”

Establishing a clean energy standard.

“There’s no reason why Congress shouldn’t at least set a clean energy standard that creates a market for innovation.”

A “Greener” Navy

“I’m proud to announce that the Department of Defense… the world’s largest consumer of energy, will make one of the largest commitments to clean energy in history -– with the Navy purchasing enough capacity to power a quarter of a million homes a year.”

Leader in high-tech batteries.

“In three years, our partnership with the private sector has already positioned America to be the world’s leading manufacturer of high-tech batteries. Because of federal investments, renewable energy use has nearly doubled, and thousands of Americans have jobs because of it.”

Want to Learn More?

The information and quotations included in this post regarding the American energy policy were extracted from the January 24, 2012 State of the Union Address, delivered by President Barack Obama to the U.S. House of Representatives. A full video of and transcript of the speech are accessible by following this link http://1.usa.gov/z724g3 to the White House website.

In fall of 2011, the Greater Baton Rouge Clean Cities Coalition studied emerging electric vehicle models, charging infrastructures and market potential in order to determine the feasibility of electric vehicles (EVs) in our region. To gather input from local experts, we hosted an EV Stakeholder Strategy Session on July 19th and an EV Feasibility Forum on Oct. 5, both held at Louisiana State University’s Center for Energy Studies.

The study was submitted to the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the national initiative to assess EV viability. We hope the 19-page report will also be a useful resource for our stakeholders. Particularly helpful for the expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure locally will be the 8 maps, which include an illustrated list of our recommended EV charging station locations.

Please take a moment to download the report here: EVfeasibility_GBRCCC

We welcome all suggestions regarding this study. Please send your comments to us at gbrccc@gmail.com

Round of applause to Southeast Louisiana Clean Fuel Partnership (http://www.cleanfuelpartnership.org/) for their efforts to bring biodiesel to the film industry in the greater New Orleans region. This story appeared in the coalition’s most recent newsletter:

Second Line Stages (SLS), in partnership with Golden Leaf Energy, now offers biodiesel fuel to the region’s booming film industry. The fuel will be available at Second Line Stages, located at 800 Richard Street in New Orleans, as well as by delivery for productions shooting on location. Projects filming in the greater New Orleans region can now save time and cut costs associated with repeated visits to gas stations. Hollywood Trucks, Louisiana’s largest, full-service film fleet, was the first fleet to commit to using the B5 blend in their diesel vehicles. A sticker by the gas tank will mark the vehicle’s ability to take the fuel.

“Hollywood Trucks is excited to partner with Second Line Stages to offer biodiesel as an alternative fuel to its clients in specific units of its fleet,” said Andre Champagne, President of Hollywood Trucks, LLC. “We believe that the future lies in renewable and sustainable resources, which reduce emissions and promote a cleaner environment.”

B5, a mix of 5% biodiesel with 95% regular, is included in ASTM Standard D975-11, the industry specification for diesel fuel, and is therefore interchangeable with traditional diesel. In fact, biodiesel will add back in some of the lubricity lost with the switch to ultra-low sulfur diesel. The biodiesel is manufactured locally from spent cooking oil and meets the ASTM D6751-11b standard for 100% biodiesel before being blended with regular diesel. Second Line Stages offers biodiesel fuel ranging from B2-B100 for both on and off-road vehicles.

B5 reduces particulate matter, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in vehicle emissions by 4-5%, while improving air quality for vehicle drivers, on-location talent and production staff. In addition, biodiesel improves engine performance by adding lubricity to diesel fuel that was removed as a result of the mandated switch to ultra-low sulfur diesel. B5 will create no adverse performance effects, nor require engine alterations.

Troy Clark, Managing Partner at Golden Leaf Energy, is excited about the partnership: “We commend Second Line Stages and their customers for their commitment to alternative fuels and a cleaner environment. We are confident that this partnership will demonstrate the benefits and rewards of using locally produced alternative fuel to all fleets in the region.”

Productions interested in purchasing biodiesel please contact Diane Wheeler.
